A pleasant visit
to Banyuls-sur-Mer, (1861-1944).
French sculptor, painter and engraver of Catalan origin
His works are characterized by their volume and simple realism. Maillol was primarily influenced by classical Greek art. He dedicated himself almost exclusively to the female nude, and the figures he created typically depict strong, earthy-looking women. The attitudes, forms, and models recreated by Maillol possessed great power but were never contrived, and the faces generally expressed emotions of impassive seriousness or serenity. He sought perfection more than originality, and his style underwent few changes throughout his career.
Maillol was the most prominent sculptor in France during the period between Auguste Rodin and the avant-garde, but his art, influenced by classicism, marked more the end of a tradition than the beginning of a new era or stage.
