The Fascinating Everyday Life of Mónica Castanys

Everyday life as art

Mónica Castanys, born in Barcelona in 1973, is an artist who has captured the beauty of the everyday with a unique sensitivity. Raised in a family with artistic roots, she is the granddaughter of Valentí Castanys, a popular and renowned Catalan cartoonist.

From his grandfather he inherited an extraordinary capacity for observation, something he has been able to channel exceptionally well throughout his painting career.
Trained at the La Llotja School of Design and Art in Barcelona, Castanys graduated in 1993 with a degree in Painting Techniques. Since then, her artistic career has been unstoppable, with numerous exhibitions in galleries throughout Spain and Europe. From 2004 onwards, she has dedicated herself entirely to painting, developing a distinctive style that blends urban life with personal introspection.

Mónica Castanys's work is characterized by its ability to transform everyday scenes into something profoundly reflective and aesthetically captivating. Her artistic approach focuses on daily life, both in the private and public spheres, exploring the dynamic between these two worlds.

The scenes he captures range from intimate moments inside the home to street scenes, where interaction with the environment and others becomes the main focus.
Through his interior paintings, a calm and tranquility is reflected, contrasting with the vitality and dynamism of the urban scenes he also portrays. In these, the city streets are the stage where social life unfolds, with its bustling moments and, at the same time, with small oases of tranquility, such as café terraces or outdoor scenes.
In the work of Mónica Castanys, the female figure occupies a central place.

Frequently, his characters are women captured in everyday moments, almost always depicted in profile or with their backs turned, which gives them a certain emotional distance, as if they were oblivious to the prominence they inevitably acquire in the scene..

This approach allows the artist to create a space for reflection in which the female figures, although seemingly secondary, are the ones that give balance and rhythm to her compositions.
Light plays a fundamental role in Castanys' work, especially in his outdoor scenes. His urban paintings are imbued with natural light that not only brings spaces to life but also creates contrasts that invite reflection.

The open-air terraces, the sun-drenched streets, and the interiors illuminated by the soft light of the afternoon are silent witnesses to daily life, and through them, the artist invites us to stop and observe the beauty of simplicity.
